Crataegus, commonly known as hawthorn, have a rich composition which has a beneficial effect on the whole body. In particular, it prevents the formation of tumours, tones the skin, reduces puffiness, has a calming effect and even promotes weight loss. Most often however, hawthorns are used in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as:
- Hypertension
- Tachycardia
- Angina pectoris
- Arrhythmia
- Atherosclerosis - Stroke
- Coronary heart disease
They contain flavonoids, carotenoids (provitamin A), vitamins C, E, K, macro and microelements (potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper and zinc) and provide a powerful healing effect on the hearts muscle and blood vessels. They:
- Relieve spasms
- Expand blood vessels
- Stimulate the heart muscle
- Normalise the heart rate
- Provide an adequate oxygen supply

Hawthorn can be consumed as it is as a berry or, it can be brewed to create a tea. Remember that an uncontrolled intake of it can cause an overdose, which can cause nausea, vomiting, baby colic, dizziness, and even disturbances in the heart's rhythm.
